The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation will hold a blessing ceremony at 9 a.m. today to commemorate its opening of the Machado Acres Park in Hilo.

Mayor Billy Kenoi, area Councilman J Yoshimoto and Kahu Gaymond Apaka will join other dignitaries in dedicating the 7.9-acre park within Machado Acres Subdivision.

“Hawaii Island’s newest park represents our unrelenting commitment to make recreation more accessible for our growing communities,” said Parks Director Robert Fitzgerald, of the Keone Street site located between Haihai and Ainaola streets.

Three concrete loops form a network of walking paths suitable for seniors, keiki and other park users seeking exercise. Within those loops are three distinct and sizeable grassed areas that are suitable for other forms of recreation.

The two parcels comprising the park site were transferred to Hawaii County ownership in 2003 and designated specifically for park purposes.
